Bubblegum Sentience

I have a bubblegum sentience

A rose-colored existence

I experience hilarity vicariously

Through the ones who've come before me

It’s my first time being alive

I need you to help me thrive

So why do you chew me up

Blow me up

Pop!

And then it stops

Behind the Poem...Memes

This one started at 4am while I was finishing up my finals for two classes. I was thinking to myself "I am barely sentient right now, much less coherent enough to do this project." I ended up staying awake until 5:30am, then going to work at 7:40. Not a fun day. I don't remember where the word "bubblegum" came from for the life of me. All I know is I was walking back to the office out of the kitchen, but there is no gum anywhere in the house so there's really no telling. I just know that around 4:15am, I posted a story on IG about the title "bubblegum sentience" and decided this was going to go somewhere. It sounded too cool not to use it.

The part that sort of drove me to create the theme of the poem, however, was the line "this is my first time being alive." That line is straight from a meme I scrolled by. I thought it was brilliant, so I snatched it and put it in my notes on my phone. It's in the same vein as the phrase "I was just saying words recreationally" (another meme phrase I want to use someday). If I come across the meme again, I'll absolutely post it. I just don't remember.

I would love to turn this poem into a full blown song one day, but I don't think I could do it justice given my skills right now. I really like it as it stands, very rhythmic and pulling from a lot of places in a nostalgic sort of way. It's defintiley worth building off of later on, so I'll keep that notes tab open for more memage as I come across it.
